Medical Officer Awaiting Deployment to Afghanistan is Local ED Physician Assistant

When Justin Stafford joined the Army Reserve, he not only saw it as a way of giving back to his country. Stafford saw it as an opportunity that would help him grow both personally and professionally.

Stafford is currently a PA-C (Certified Physician Assistant) in the Emergency Department at Parma Community General Hospital in Parma, OH. With an undergraduate degree in exercise physiology from Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio, Stafford holds a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska.

Employed with Emergency Medicine Physicians (EMP) for the past four years,
Stafford was sworn in to the U.S. Army Reserves on April 28, 2011. He serves with the 391 Military Police (MP) Battalion based out of Columbus, OH. Holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he is the Medical Officer for the Unit, which represents four companies. Each company is composed of approximately 150 persons.

It wasn’t a difficult choice for Stafford to serve his county. His entire father’s side served in various branches of the military. According to Stafford, his family has been the biggest influence in his life, particularly his father. “He instilled in us a work ethic to do what it takes to get the job done,” said Stafford.

What was the best advice his family gave him? “If you really want something, don’t be afraid to go after it,” recalled Stafford.

While Stafford is awaiting orders for his first deployment overseas to Afghanistan, he continues to work full time in the ED and is planning his future family and career with wife Georgina – who provides unwavering support for all of his endeavors.

His Parma Community General Hospital has a 22-23% admission rate which is approximately 60% of total hospital admissions. Stafford works in the newly renovated ED that provides 44 beds in 24,000 square feet. His diligent work includes patients with medical cases and some minor industrial trauma.

The hospital Stafford works in has a small pediatric unit on site but complex pediatric cases sent to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital
