Vaginal Mesh Resource Center Offers Help to Women Injured by a TVM Device

Vaginal mesh was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat symptoms associated with pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a condition that involves the weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. Since 2008, the FDA has received approximately 4,000 complaints about the devices.
In July 2011, the organization issued a new warning which stated that vaginal mesh implants could potentially cause serious and irrevocable side effects. In November 2011, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Urogynecologic Society issued a joint opinion recommending limiting the use of vaginal mesh only to high-risk women who could not benefit from other treatment methods.
Currently, there are approximately 350 vaginal mesh lawsuits pending in a New Jersey state court. These cases, filed against the Johnson & Johnson Company, allege that the Ethicon Gynecare vaginal mesh system caused serious injuries among the plaintiffs, including bowel and bladder perforation, extensive bleeding, blood vessel damage, infection, painful intercourse and scarring. These cases are scheduled to go to trial in November 2012. With 300,000 women receiving a vaginal mesh device in 2010 alone, lawsuits against the makers of these devices are expected to increase.
