Art Contest: TomorrowsGlobalSociety*
On May 4, 2007, TheCompensators*, a not for profit association launched an international contest about possible futures of Planet Earth and its inhabitants: us. The contest intends to raise awareness about climate change and the need to invent alternative futures. Art communicates differently than science and touches the minds and hearts of many people. Therefore, the contest contains the potential to communicate about the abstract topic climate change to many more people than science can do alone. The background: Climate change is real. Its impacts can be detected already today and will become far more serious if effective mitigation and adaptation measures are not undertaken. There is widespread agreement that the global temperature increase should not exceed 2°C above the pre-industrial level. However, there is no credible plan - neither from politics nor from business – on how to reach this target.
The Contest: How on earth can we live together? How can we make sure that all life forms are preserved for centuries to come? Participants will reflect on these questions and produce a piece of art which tells us how TomorrowsGlobalSociety* may look like. Ideas may be submitted to the following categories: Visual, Audio, Audio- Visual, Paper, Items, Black Box.
TheCompensators* are aware of the fact that information, when shared, can travel a long way. The best submissions will be awarded and will travel with a moving exhibition to touch as many places and minds as possible. A coffee-table book and a DVD will also be produced and distributed. All contributions will be exhibited online.
Greenpeace Energy sponsors some of the prices. We welcome other sponsors to provide support and to create a larger incentive for participation. More information and participation conditions: http://www.TomorrowsGlobalSociety.org
TheCompensators* e.V. is a not for profit association which offers the possibility to individuals and business to delete emissions allowances from the EU ETS. By decreasing the number of allowances on the market, TheCompensators* e.V. wants to increase the price of CO2 emissions until climate-friendly technologies become competitive. Through this action TheCompensators* e.V. wants to signal the need of more stringent national allocation plans and an auctioning of emission allowances in the beginning of trading periods. By joining TheCompensators* and by deleting emission allowances from EU ETS individuals implicitly support an effective climate policy.
