Dubai, United Arab Emirates, December 6, 2011: - GSK- Consumer Healthcare has organized a Symposium Tour for the region’s Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) on the subject of ‘Smoking Cessation with Therapeutic Nicotine’. The tour includes 5 sessions for HCPs across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Beirut, Riyadh & Jeddah between December 6th and 12th 2011.

Dr. Saul Shiffman has been invited to conduct these series of lectures.

Dr. Shiffman – PhD, currently holds the position of Research Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He is also a senior scientific advisor at Pinney Associates and consults companies that offer smoking cessation products.

In addition to sharing latest research on the subject, the symposium tour will also mark the launch of NiQuitin – GSK- Consumer Healthcare’s original nicotine replacement therapy, which after a very successful 20-year global presence will now be available across the region during the coming weeks.

Amongst other things Shiffman will speak on the prevalence of smoking within the region and the fallacy of the water pipe (Shisha) being a safer option.

“Improving the quality of human life is what we constantly strive for at GSK, which makes Smoking Cessation and NiQuitin, a subject that tops our priority list. In line with the measures being taken by health authorities across the region to reduce the prevalence of smoking, we at GSK- CONSUMER HEALTHCARE seek to educate HCPs and Smokers alike on the NiQuitin and the support it adds in the process of quitting,” said Ramez Sawiris, Regulatory Affairs Director for GSK, MENA region.

“It is commendable to see the Middle East region achieve such increased levels of awareness on the hazards of smoking. The symposium geared to reinforce the understanding and involvement of the healthcare fraternity in the process of helping patients rid themselves of smoking addiction and to educate HCPs on the research associated with nicotine replacement therapies with the support of NiQuitin,” said Saul Shiffman.

Nicotine Replacement Therapies have proven to be effective for over 20 years now. They help reduce withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, anxiety and irritability, through a reducing nicotine dose without the harmful tar or gases inhaled in through cigarettes and water pipe (Shisha).

The symposium tour will emphasize on key elements in curbing smoking as a highly prevalent habit. The affecting factors to be debated are: Price increases, Clean indoor air regulations, Cigarette graphic labeling, Restricting advertising & promotion, Coordinated/effective policies to promote interest in quitting and education and endorsement of NRT to help smokers succeed at quitting.
