Dance Training, Home Schooling and Video Auditions - Iwanson International goes digital

Who wouldn't know them, these days - the videos showing the ballerina working out in her kitchen, the duet in the park, the yoga mat with the teacher's children rolling around behind her. But in fact, these are not just funny little clips, but a sheer necessity in a dancer's life: keep in shape, keep your form. If you're actually training to become a dancer, it's not enough to keep your form - you must develop further, you must progress, so - work even harder!
The Munich dance academy Iwanson International is one of the biggest private dance training centres for Contemporary Dance in Europe. But behind the school, there is no governmental or non-governmental organisation, no patron or sponsor to cushion financial hardships. As all other schools, Iwanson International has been closed for weeks, the studios are empty, the performances postponed. After the first shock, everyone involved quickly realized that these cuts into the curriculum are too deep to simply wait for the pandemic to pass. The normal routines won't be possible in their former way, whether that's twenty people sweating together in a studio with hands-on corrections or an artistic exchange in direct contact
So special programmes and ideas were immediately put into place generating trust and finding the approval of teachers, students and parents alike. The two relatively fresh directors, Johannes Haertl and Marie Preussler, who took over the helm as only last year, navigate their ship through difficult times with circumspection and care for the needs of their artists, teachers and students.
At the moment, there are numerous online courses, covering somatic training, ballet, Modern/Contemporary and Jazz. More time is spent on theory with specially developed tutorials and with the students writing essays. Important for the senior students: planning for their final performances has begun, rehearsals from afar are being tested, the soli are being developed, open stage projects are seen online (via Zoom and for students and staff only). But many of the international students have flown home when it was still possibly to do so. When and how they will return to Munich, is not clear yet at all.
What is clear are the auditions for the next semester: video-application is possible (for more info write to schule@iwanson.de). Additional measures ensuring a regular school curriculum are in place, the team feels encouraged to come up with unusual ideas, shouldering the crisis as an ensemble dealing with challenges in a creative way.
