Christmas and Economic Downturn Combine to Increased Risk of Domestic Burglary
Turkey, tree, fairy lights, gifts, security... the last item probably doesn’t feature on your household Christmas checklist but maybe it should. Burglary is always a growth industry during economic downturn. In the recession of the late 80s and early 90s, domestic burglaries rose by around a third and Christmas makes for the richest pickings. With violence a feature of many break-ins, it could be time to invest in a Panic Room to protect your family and your valued possessions.Steve Brook, Business Development Director of the Panic Room Company, comments, “Experts warn that criminals target more homes in the winter months as the evenings are darker and some families seize the opportunity to jet off to some winter sun. As the gap between ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ widens, the temptation of a house full of expensive Christmas booty becomes very great and some intruders will take great risks to get their hands on it, risks involving your property and your loved ones. Our affordable Panic Rooms are a safe sustainable refuge, a last point of defence, and well worth the investment for peace of mind.”
One group of individuals at constant threat of intrusion is the Premier Footballing fraternity. Their offensively large pay packets buy extravagant homes, ostentatious motors and costly designer clothes and jewellery – what’s more, thanks to the tabloid press, everybody knows it. All a would-be burglar needs is a copy of the latest Premiership Football fixture list and he knows when the man of the house is out at work. It’s a far from comfortable situation.
Of course these high profile sportsmen always install security gates, video entry and CCTV, but if someone’s determined to break in, they will. You can’t eliminate 100% of risk, only upwards of 90%, which is why some Premier League Clubs are now bringing in private security companies, employing part- or full-time guards and installing panic rooms – a last resort safe haven that’s a real life saver if things get violent, as they sadly sometimes do.
In September 2009 knife-wielding raiders forced injured Phil Jagielka into handing over jewellery, expensive watches and the keys to his Range Rover. In February 2009 Darren Fletcher’s fiancée was held at knifepoint as they made off with her engagement ring and other jewellery – Darren was abroad on Champion’s League duty. In July 2008 Emile Heskey’s girlfriend was threatened with a knife as two men stole jewellery and keys to his BMW X5. Steven Gerrard’s wife was confronted by masked robbers in December 2007 whilst he too was playing in Europe and stole a Rolex and two sets of car keys after threatening to abduct the children if she didn’t show them to the safe. The list goes on, Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch, Daniel Agger, Pepe Reina... they have all been targets and on each occasion the intruders have evaded extensive security systems. Panic rooms make more and more sense.
Of course you don’t have to be a Premiership Footballer to be a target this winter. Take sensible precautions with your home and your possessions, leave lights on if you go away and ensure presents aren’t temptingly laid out in full view of passers-by. But sadly there are some determined and highly skilled individuals out there and the phrase “safe as houses” means nothing to them.
