Greenbaum Rowe Partner Moderates Panel on Global Women’s Issues

Raymond M. Brown moderated a panel on global women’s issues at the 33rd Annual Conference of the National Association of Women Judges in Newark, New Jersey.

Woodbridge, NJ, November 15, 2011 -- Raymond M. Brown, chair of the White Collar Defense & Corporate and International Human Rights Compliance Group (IHRC) at the law firm of Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith & Davis LLP, moderated a panel, Conversation with Leaders of Global Women’s Issues, at the 33rd Annual Conference of the National Association of Women Judges on October 13, 2011 at the Gateway Hilton in Newark, NJ. The panel discussion focused on current and emerging global women’s issues and the role played by legal institutions and judges.

Panelists included Simone Monasebian, Esq., Chief of the New York Office of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime; Hon. Rosemary Barkett, U.S. Court of appeals, 11th Circuit; Wanda M. Akin, Esq., Principal, Wanda M. Akin & Associates, Attorneys at Law; and Joseph M. Sellers, Esq., Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll, PLLC.

The IHRC, of which Mr. Brown is chair, addresses the need for multinational companies to assess market entry or ongoing business operations through a human rights impact assessment as a matter of corporate due diligence. Such assessments have largely been done by companies in the mining or oil exploration (extractive) industries when they were entering a host country that was economically underdeveloped or conflict ridden and, as a result, had few human rights safeguards. The recent human rights exposures of BP’s Gulf spill and Google’s censorship issues in China have changed the due diligence calculus: a developed country like the US can be a victim of human rights abuses, and abuses can occur in any industry, like search engine technology.

Mr. Brown, along with Wanda M. Akin, gave a lecture on October 21, 2011 at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York entitled, Lawyering Beyond Borders: A Window Into the Practice of International Criminal Law at the International Criminal Court and Other International Tribunals.

On November 10, 2011, Mr. Brown will present a seminar in conjunction with the
NJ Corporate Counsel Association entitled, Trade Off or Virtuous Circle? Human Rights Due Diligence in a Global Economy with panelist Martin J. Carrara, Senior Corporate Counsel at Pfizer, Lora Fong, Managing Counsel at Salesforce.com, and Simone Monasebian, Chief of the New York Office of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
