School eye discoloration may point to serious problem

The whites of the eye, sclera, are called whites because they are supposed to be white and not some other color. Eye discoloration may point to a more serious problem.

The sclera function is to protect the rest of the eye. Any damage to it threatens the whole eye.

The most common eye color change is yellow. That is generally a indicator of jaundice. Jaundice means the body has an excess amount of bilirubin.

"What causes too much bilirubin? A whole lot of reasons," said Dr. Paul Super, O.D., F.A.A.O. "One of the first indicators of jaundice is when the whites of the eye begin to yellow. That happens even before the skin begins to show a yellow tinge."

An eye exam can often spot the yellowing before the patient notices it.

"You keep hearing that early detection matters. It does. Spotting the yellowing early means treatment can begin sooner and get a better outcome," Dr. Super said.

The second most common reason for eye having discoloration in the white is medicines. Certain medicines can color the whites.

"Sometimes this can be dangerous, sometimes it is just a harmless side effect," Dr. Super said. "A good eye doctor can get to the root of the problem quickly. He can then consult with your other doctor or doctors to decide if your medicines can or should be changed."

Regular eye exams can find these problems early.
