"Insurance depends on who you have, what your disability. In both cases, it depends on your disability, how long you will have it and what your doctor has to say about your need for a scooter or electric wheelchair," said Frank Bravo at Wishing Well Medical Supply in Santa Monica ( www.wishingwellmedicalsupply.com ).
Getting a scooter and having insurance pay does require a prescription from a doctor. Mr. Bravo said this has to be a face-to-face meeting, not telemedia or online. The doctor has to certify a medical need for the scooter.
With that in hand, it may take a bit for the insurance company to approve the purchase. A purchase may also be subject to a co-pay or deductible, Mr. Bravo as his company is used to working with major health insurance companies and can help people fill out the needed paperwork.
For Medicare, the person needs Part B to get help paying for the scooter. Part D covers durable medical equipment like electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters. In most cases, Part B covers 80 percent of the cost of the scooter.
"If you have supplemental insurance for Medicare, it may cover the extra 20 percent. If you do not have a supplemental policy and you have to pay that cost yourself, we may be able to help there as well," Mr. Bravo said. "Every person is different and we will do everything we can to help you get what you need."
Wishing Well carries a variety of scooters and wheelchairs, including lightweight foldable mobility scooters. Mr. Bravo said the foldable ones are good for people who do not have a lift on the back of their vehicle.
