“Shining A Light Against Mouth Cancer”

“Light Against Cancer” (www.light-against-cancer.com) is to work closely with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, the UK’s leading head and neck cancer charity, for the benefit of head and neck cancer patients.

Frankfurt, October 26, 2011 – The German “Light against cancer“ initiative and the world renowned Mouth Cancer Foundation have agreed to work closely in the fight against cancer. Both agree that patients need the information and access to the fact that the fight against cancer cells can be increasingly done photodynamically: Light-sensitive agents combined with laser light lead to considerable healing successes. Particularly in the head and neck area, photodynamic therapy (PDT) constitutes a good supplement as well as a promising alternative to established cancer treatments. Jointly, the two partners want to increase their efforts in favour of the use of PDT.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a professional support organization solely dedicated to supporting people with mouth, throat and other head & neck cancer face the crisis of cancer. Support can be a vital component of the healing process for head and neck cancer patients. It can have an enormous positive impact in meeting the psychosocial needs of patients as well as preserving, restoring, and promoting physical and emotional health. Its founder Dr. Vinod Joshi believes that self-help organisations should emphasise the scientifically rational aspect of the disease and treatments besides providing caring psychosocial support towards enabling patients’ recovery. People affected with cancer are not alone. The website www.mouthcancerfoundation.org provides numerous patients’ stories to encourage them.

A comparable role is striven for by the initiative “Light against cancer” in the German-speaking area. The new website www.light-against-cancer.com informs and bolsters up people with a cancer diagnosis. A list of treatment centres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland helps them to find PDT specialists faster.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a method for the treatment of tumours and other tissue degenerations applying light in combination with a light-sensitive drug (photosensitiser) and oxygen present in the tissue.

The sensitiser gathers selectively in the tumour or the tissue degeneration. Then the cancer cells are exposed to laser light with an appropriate wavelength. In this process, reactive forms of oxygen are generated that harm and mortify the cancer cells affected.

Although photodynamic therapy was invented already at the beginning 20th century, it has not been applied in clinical medicine until the 1980s when significant improvements of available photosensitisers and the development of modern diode lasers could be achieved. Typical PDT application areas comprise the entire head and neck area, the skin, the oesophagus, the bladder, lungs, biliary tract, and the genital area.

“Light against cancer“ is an ambitious private initiative against cancer with a focus on photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Germany. “Light against cancer” intends to make PDT better publicly known and establish it as a demanded form of therapy against the widespread disease cancer. We have set ourselves the goal to educate about PDT and to convince as many physicians and people affected of PDT. The benefits and effectiveness of PDT are so huge that over the long-run nobody will be able to ignore them.
