Press release from: Siteimprove

Minneapolis, MN October 25th, 2011: Siteimprove found interesting data while researching the top 25 cancer hospital websites. They collected data such as average number of broken links and misspellings. Other findings were accessibility and platform dependent document figures. The cancer hospital list used to implement this study is from US News best ranking cancer hospitals of 2011.

From the study, the most surprising number was the average number of broken links. The study ran a website check on the first 2,000 pages of the top 25 cancer hospital websites and found an average of 181 broken links. These broken links were separated into internal and external links. There were 52% internal broken links and 48% external broken links.

Misspellings are common to any organization’s website, but to hospitals, the most common five misspelled words are: diagnostic, assessment, personnel, specialties, and development, according to the findings from Siteimprove. They divided this data into misspellings by specific content management systems (CMS). The highest number of misspellings by CMS is 118.

For accessibility, the findings show 17 out of 25 websites did not have appropriate alternative text on all images and, the most common platform for dependent documents used is Word.
