Arvel Bird Nominated for Best Male Artist and Best Traditional Flute at CAMAS
Internationally acclaimed Arvel Bird has been nominated for Best Male Artist and Best Traditional Flute Album at the 2011 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards to be held November 18 in Toronto, Canada. The nominations are for Bird’s popular flute album, From the Heart of a Paiute, released earlier this year. From the Heart of a Paiute is a tribute to all the Native American flute makers who continue to provide the music of the “wood that sings.”
“I love this album because it is truly from the heart,” says Arvel Bird. “If you spend time with your flute, it will give you a song. I am honored to be nominated for this album.”
The Native American flute has a long, rich history of creating music for courtship, healing, meditation and spiritual rituals for many centuries. Unlike other flutes, the Native American flute is constructed with two air chambers. The top air chamber serves as a secondary resonator that gives the flute its distinctive sound. No two Native American flutes are alike, making each a unique instrument.
Each song on From the Heart of a Paiute is performed with a different flute, and the flute maker and type of flute is attributed in the album notes. The 18 songs on the album feature mostly solo flute, with minor accompaniments. A master of his craft, Arvel Bird pushes every flute to its limit, discovering notes that even the flute makers didn’t know existed. The haunting melodies capture the heart of the Native American tradition and the essence of the landscape of the Southwest desert that leaves listeners spellbound.
