The Idea

"The question is: Why do i have to worry constantly about the charge percentage after just a year of buying a new phone? "
This is the most classic smartphone consumer's question.
Around 2017 Andrea Tognoli, the future CEO of Witty, tired of the stress generated by the battery of his phone, tried to go to the bottom of the question analyzing what could be the causes that drastically reduces the life of a battery.

Talking about this problem with his university colleagues, Luca Martini and Lorenzo Craia, respectively future CTO and COO, they began to study the main causes of the early deterioration of smartphone batteries (also all devices equipped with lithium-ion batteries).
After several tests, they discovered that the main cause of excessive deterioration is represented by night overcharging, a phenomenon present in most of the population.

Research was therefore carried out to understand how to stem this phenomenon and after about two years of testing in the La Sapienza laboratory, the technology that houses Witty was created inside.
Subsequently, with the help of the Advisor Fabio Lenci (internationally renowned designer, awarded Compasso d'Oro for his career in 2016), it was decided to create it in pocket size, as large as a USB stick. Design that was then renewed with the entry into the team of the architect Federica Fruhwirth, who gave the prototype a fresh and innovative shape, making it pleasant to handle as it is covered in soft touch plastic.

Witty is therefore a jewel of Internal and External Design totally made in Italy.
The advice of the (Advisor) University Professor Francesco Costantino, professor at the Sapienza University of various exams including Management of Industrial Plants, was useful for the structure of the distribution chain.
In September 2019, after almost two years from the initial idea, the first working prototype was created with the definitive form that predisposes a LED to simply interface with the consumer.

Witty doubles the life of your battery

How works Witty's technology?

Thanks to the intelligent charging controller, Witty is able to monitor the current flow and understand when the smartphone / device is charged. Therefore, when the current absorbed by the smartphone drops below a certain threshold, Witty disconnects the phone from the charger thanks to its electromechanical switch. If the phone is used while it is charging, Witty is able to detect a higher current draw and not disconnect the phone. Theoretically the nominal voltage of the mobile phone battery is 4.2V (applying 4.2V the battery reaches 100%), in practice manufacturers tend to slightly "overcharge" the battery with voltages up to 4.3V to extend battery life during the day (to have a better performing battery in the morning = more runtime). However, this practice tends to age faster its capacity (useful life), in fact, by observing Table 1, it can be noted that whit a charging voltage of 4.2V we can enjoy about 500 charge cycles, while overcharging it at 4, 30 V are reduced to 150, but having 10-15% more charge per discharge cycles available. Figure 1, on the other hand, shows us graphically how this end of charge voltage significantly affects the battery capacity.
Witty does not prevent the battery from reaching the end of charge voltage imposed by the manufacturer but prevents the latter from being subjected to this voltage for all the hours in which the smartphone is left to charge with the battery at 100%. Therefore, Witty eliminates much of the overload by eliminating premature aging.

The team is made up of three engineers and a designer who completed their studies at the University of Rome "La Sapienza".
In particular, the CEO (Andrea Tognoli, 28 years old) is a Mechanical Engineer who then obtained his master's degree in Management Engineering specializing in Industrial Production Management.
The COO (Lorenzo Craia, 25 years old) is a Management Engineer specialized in the Master of Business Management course.
The CTO (Luca Martini, 29 years old) is a PhD. in Electronic Engineering specialized in Electronic and Phototonic Technologies.
The Designer (Federica Fruhwirth, 29 years old) is an architect specializing in illustration.

CEO and COO took care of transforming the idea into a product by designating the distribution chain from scratch (thus making agreements with the various manufacturers and carriers)
The CTO was responsible for the scientific validation of the idea, the design of the technology and the prototyping phase carried out within the La Sapienza laboratories in Rome.
The designer took care of giving a fresh and new shape to the product and logo.
