Montblanc Limited Writers Edition 2011 Carlo Collodi - A homage to the creator of Pinocchio

Montblanc presents the Limited Writers Edition 2011, an intricately crafted piece celebrating the Italian author Carlo Collodi, the creator of literature’s most enduring children’s characters: Pinocchio. Collodi’s imaginary story of the wooden puppet in search of boyhood has enchanted generations and has been the subject of numerous adaptations in film, art and theater. ‘The Adventure of Pinocchio’ is perhaps regarded as the most recognized children’s story in Western civilization.

As the custodian of writing culture, Montblanc created the first Limited Writers Edition in 1992 to honor literary icons who in their lifetime made an indelible mark on cultural history through the power and beauty of their words. Some of the greatest past masters of literature have seen a limited edition writing instrument dedicated to them from Voltaire to Dickens, or Dostoevsky to Proust. Collodi will now join this exclusive group with the launch of dedicated writing instruments.

Carlo Collodi, born Carlo Lorenzini, on 24 November 1826 in Florence, grew up in modest circumstances as the son of a cook and a chambermaid. Collodi was fortunate to have his education financed by his parents’ employer who made it possible for him to go on and study philosophy and rhetoric.

Having worked as a librarian, translator, novelist, author, political writer and a period in the army, he published his own satirical newspaper Il Lampione, which sharply opposed the Austrian occupation. To avoid possible persecution in 1860, he took the name of Collodi, after the Tuscan village in which his mother was born.

Under his pseudonym, Collodi was set out to pen one of the few masterpieces of children’s literature: The Adventures of Pinocchio, published in 1883. The fabulous adventures of the mischievous wooden puppet Pinocchio achieved an international breakthrough in the 20th century. When he died in 1890 in Florence, the author was unaware of the overwhelming success his work would enjoy globally.

Every detail of the limited edition is carefully designed to reflect Collodi’s epic masterpiece. The primary material is a dark-brown precious resin, the book’s colourful characters including the voracious whale, the loyal cricket, the shady fox, the deceitful cat and the good fairy are featured on the skeletonised cap overlay.

A screw set into the clip symbolises the joints of the famous marionette, while the cone is reminiscent of Pinocchio’s legendary growing nose. The limitation number and Collodi’s signature adorn the top of the cap, while the cricket on the 18K champagnegold nib completes this edition of most precious fountain pens.

Montblanc is also introducing its new Collectables Collection, a series of men’s Jewellery limited to just 1000 pieces launched to coincide with the limited edition Carlo Collodi. The pieces aim to surprise through the use of exquisite materials and intricate details mirroring the writing instruments they relate to.

The Collectables cuff links celebrating Collodi are inspired by the master’s fairytale. The bronze tone of the cuff links’ finish are reminiscent of the colour of the boy’s human skin, whereas the brown inlay of precious resin clearly references Pinocchio’s state as a wooden puppet. The three gold rings, which decorate the links, represent the three books Pinocchio always carried with him.
