Northern Ireland Introduces new First Aid at Work Legislation
From 1st October 2011, Northern Ireland brings its First Aid at Work Training legislation in line with the rest of the United Kingdom.There is now a regulated one day first aid (EFAW) qualification available for appointed persons. This can be used to name the appointed person as a First Aider for regulatory purposes. All those working in a high-risk area with over 5 employees must have a first aider present to deal with injury or illness, but the First Aid at work regulations also impact self employed and small businesses.
Changes made to the law regarding First aid may also affect your insurance, and these need to be checked.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has made two key changes:
1. The number of days for the FAW (First Aid at Work) has been reduced from four days to three days.
2. A new one day regulated course (EFAW), suitable for appointed persons, is now available.
To ensure that companies have made proper provision for their workplace, sending an appointed person to an EFAW training course, will better enable them to meet their legal responsibilities.
