I was posting a comment at a law forum recently when I noticed one poster whom made some attention-grabbing comments regarding paid surveys. This comments conveyed that taking online surveys was a complete waste of time and I thought to myself “just because this person didn’t like the online survey process or didn’t make any money at it doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time”.

Making money at online surveys is just like any other work at home opportunity, it takes some skill, it takes some effort and it takes some knowledge to bring these opportunities to fruition.

There are a few general points that need to be stated up front when discussing paid online surveys.

1. Online surveys will almost never generate enough income to make a career of it but it can be a great way to supplement your income. Earning upwards a few hundred dollars a month is a distinct possibility and the more time and effort you put forth the more fruitful it can be.

2. You won’t always be compensated monetarily for surveys you complete. Many companies offer other kinds of rewards, such as gifts certificates or entries into raffles and drawings. These rewards are usually clearly marked when you receive invitations to participate and you must always read the reward offerings closely because some companies vary their rewards greatly. This is usually based on reward for effort received, the longer or more complicated the survey usually the greater the reward.

3. You won’t qualify for most of the questionnaires you receive. It’s a fact that some people demographically will qualify for more than half the surveys than they get but that’s not the norm. Market research companies are looking for a wide variety of demographics based in part on location of residency, annual income, age group, etc. A major downside many face when first venturing into paid online surveys is that they become disappointed when their first few invitations arrive and they don’t qualify so they just decide “this is not right, paid surveys are a scam, I’m never going to do this again” but you need to be vigilant with this kind of opportunity and remember it takes time.

4. You can take a few paid surveys and the money is going to come rolling in. This is simply not true, while it may be the case for some who win a large amount of cash or a great prize the first few times out for the vast majority you have to be realistic. The average paid survey will take about 12 minutes and the average reward is about $2.00, that’s $10.00 an hour and not to bad if working from home is a priority or necessity but dreams of grandeur are not very realistic.

Some additional advice I can give is to get a separate email address from the one you regularly use because you would never want your permanent address to get on a spam list. Keep your profiles current to make sure you qualify for as many surveys as possible.

I hope this article helps and I wish you the best of luck in your ventures in working at home.
