‘NOMADIC’ ARTISTS STAGE FIRST IN A SERIES OF POP-UP SHOWS

Twenty ‘artists in search of a gallery’ show work at the Menier from 25 to 29 October 2011

From 25-29 October 2011 the Menier Gallery, 51 Southwark Street, London SE1 plays host to a ‘nomadic’ group of artists from the Espacio Gallery Project, a community movement of 100+ artists seeking their own permanent gallery space in London. As the search continues, these ‘nomadic’ shows will travel between established galleries where they pop-up as ‘artistic oases’.

This first Espacio Nomadic show presents new work from 20 of the Gallery Project’s artists who live and work in the UK with cultural roots around the world.
The show will be open daily 11am-6pm from Tuesday 25 October with late opening on Friday 28 October (to 8pm) and closing at 4pm on Saturday 29 October. A private view will be held on Thursday 27 October from 6pm to 8.30pm.

Mark Bell is influenced by urban life and the natural world, while Laura Bello explores her sunlit Colombian childhood. Mexican painter Judith Bieletto takes us for a night-time walk in the woods and Jane Bolden uses mixed media to consider the metropolitan landscape.

Eastender Jenny Bush paints and makes prints which spring from her everyday experience, and Lesley Croxford exaggerates shape and colour to intensify the experience of the ordinary. Reacting to the Canary Wharf skyscrapers, Brazilian artist Carlos de Lins paints multi-coloured geometric ‘linescapes’, while Mickey Dell begins with photography and uses screen printing to take a second look at people and places she encounters.

Zelda Eady uses Bauhaus methods and spontaneity in the hinterland between representational and abstract art while abstract patterns in everyday objects are the focus of Laura Gompertz’s oil paintings. For Sally Grumbridge, colour is a driving force, often beginning with a photograph or life study, while Stephanie Herbert muses on what it means to be alive.

The equal status of all things is paramount in the worlds created by Yolande Kenny, while Anil Nijhawan chooses vibrant colours and forms to give strong physical character to his recollections. Ralph Overill’s work inhabits a space between conscious reality and the subconscious world of dreams. In Renee Rilexie’s work, spiritual growth and the discovery of the self take centre stage in a world of vibrant colour and emotion.

Silence and the quest for undisturbed inner peace is the theme for Justyna Szpygiel’s meditative artwork, while Nora Velazco’s sumptuous canvases pulsate with Latin American rhythm and colour. Concerns about climate change loom large in Tina Viljoen’s beautiful and shocking images, while Liz Whiteman Smith questions who we are in her engaging and sometimes quirky portraits.
