Teacher Sets ‘Record’ With 40th Album

Music teacher by day, rocker by night, drummer Brian Doherty commemorates his 40th album credit. List includes They Might Be Giants, XTC and more.

New York, NY (October 2011) This fall, drummer and teacher Brian Doherty celebrates a professional milestone marking the 40th recording on which he’s played the drums over a 25-year period. His album credits represent a diverse range of artists from pop rockers They Might Be Giants, XTC and Frank Black to singer/songwriters Chip Taylor, Guy Davis and PJ Pacifico. Doherty was also embedded in the Hoboken music scene playing tracks on the recordings of Freedy Johnston, George Usher, Madderose and The Silos. In addition to the 40 releases he now celebrates, Doherty also tallies up his 15-plus years of touring with different bands. “I have vivid memories of each of these recording sessions,” Doherty explains. “Some were quick and effortless while others were more methodical. I’m thrilled that I can look back at my work and see that I’ve played with some great bands and truly gifted artists.” Doherty has also written detailed accounts of many of these sessions in a series he calls Music and Mercenaries. Story subjects thus far have been The Silos, They Might Be Giants, XTC and Freedy Johnston. More than simply dishing the proverbial “dirt”, he also uses the series to share valuable lessons he has learned with the reader.

Doherty sets new benchmarks. “In the spring of 2012, I’ll be promoting my first recording as a singer, songwriter, producer AND drummer, entitled Treated and Released. It features nine original guitar-driven rock tunes in the classic rock vain, recorded entirely in analogue. I’ve also diversified the services offered on my website to include podcasts, music business tips, distance recording, pre-recorded drum tracks, articles and demonstration videos--all original and exclusive content, most of which are entirely free.” Doherty’s also writing his memoirs about his life as a musician, teacher and father of three young children. It will reveal the real, often harsh life in the music business, some of which contributed to his divorce, homelessness and bankruptcy.

In 2001, Doherty became a public school music teacher through the NYC Teaching Fellows and continues to supply drumbeats to artists such as Twyla Tharp, M2M, PJ Pacifico, as well as to Broadway productions like RENT and Hairspray.
