Having successfully climbed Kilimanjaro in aid of children’s charity MedEquip4Kids, the Crown Oil team has returned to Bury in the UK. In the process they have beaten their £10,000 target but hope that further donations will take the final total still higher. All costs have been met by the company so that all the money raised by donations will go to MedEquip4Kids. Donations can still be made at http://www.justgiving.com/Crown-Oil.

Trek coordinator Terry Day explained, “For all the team this has been the experience of a lifetime. We started trekking through tropical jungle and the vegetation got sparser and vista more open as we climbed into the alpine scenery below the summit. It was hard, especially the final push to the summit as we all suffered medical problems of one sort or another.”

MedEquip4Kids provides special equipment and facilities for neo-natal units, children’s wards, maternity units and children’s outpatient departments. “Hospitals can be frightening places for adults, so the problem can be more acute for children. We help take some of the anxiety out of hospital visits and treatment and provide vital equipment such as incubators and defibrillators,” explained Ghazala Baig, deputy director at MedEquip4Kids.

Back to their day-jobs, the team are planning to put their feet up for a little while before considering their next charity adventure while they attend to the fuel and energy needs of industrial and construction companies.

Key Facts for Editors

MedEquip4Kids (ME4K)
ME4K is a charity dedicated to making children safer, more comfortable and happier when undergoing medical treatment. The charity makes direct donations to support projects. This can involve the supply of complex and expensive life saving equipment such as incubators and defibrillators or helping set up simple schemes like a mother’s milk bank to allow families with small babies to help each other. Last year the charity raised £700,000 and supported 43 projects. http://www.medequip4kids.org.uk/

The Crown Oil Kilimanjaro Team
Matt Greensmith (37), managing director. Matt has been up Ben Nevis a couple of times, but nothing on this scale. His motivation came from his daughter Ruby (4) who was born with heart problems and who spent a lot of time visiting hospital in the early years. “It means a lot to be giving something back for all the other poorly kids,” Matt commented.

Adrian Greenhalgh (43), finance director. Adrian had no previous trekking experience and has a preference for taxis. Adrian’s motivation was to prove to himself and his family that he can do it. His 15 year old son is planning to climb Meru in Tanzania next year and Adrian made this an opportunity for some joint training.

Mark Andrews (34), general manager. Mark had to no previous trekking experience. As a dad he was keen to help other children, but also admitted that his competitive instinct drove him to put everything he could into the project.

Terry Day (33), management accountant. Terry was trek coordinator. As a keen weekend fell walker with many summits to his name, his motivation came from the fact that he has never done anything of this scale before.

Paul White (48), national accounts manager. After walking in the UK hills and mountains for 30 years, Paul was inspired by the Red Nose Day Trek a couple of years ago.

Paul Butterworth (37) head of blending. Paul is familiar with UK fells and mountains; he saw this as an opportunity of a lifetime.

Andy and Carl Keggin both used to work for Crown and now operate as contractors on occasional projects for the company. “It’ was good to be back with the old team,” Carl commented.
