SGS REACH Services enable you to fully understand how REACH affects your company.

REACH Along the Supply Chain

Communication between customers and suppliers along the supply chain is vital for the flow of information regarding both health and safety and the environment. This is especially important when it comes to the safety assessment of the relevant uses of a product or chemical from all points along the supply chain, ensuring appropriate feedback en route.

REACH legislation affects not only manufacturers and importers of chemicals but also retailers and companies who happen to trade articles containing substances covered by REACH.

Complexity of REACH Requirements

REACH (http://www.reach.sgs.com/index.htm) does encompass legal requirements that can affect a company’s trade and therefore it is vital to understand that many or in fact the majority of consumer goods are manufactured from chemical-based rather than natural products. REACH obliges companies to register chemicals manufactured in or imported into the EU, as well as regulating hazardous materials contained within products marketed within the EU. Products utilized on a daily basis which are known to have hazardous properties are covered by REACH and the impetus is on companies to provide information gained along the supply chain. Thus companies are required to have knowledge about substances which are regulated, restricted or even banned due to their hazardous nature.

Many companies understandably feel somewhat overwhelmed at the extensive regulatory framework covered by REACH and the applicability to their own business. Deciding a strategy for compliance and implementing that strategy can also prove a challenge, with many companies requiring new structures to be put in place in order to manage their obligations under REACH.
