The role of standards in achieving Smart Grid security and privacy goals

Following on from the success of the European Smart Grid Cyber Security Forum held in March 2011 in London, the second addition in SMi’s Cyber Security portfolio; Smart Grid Cyber Security and Privacy, will be held in Amsterdam on the 14th and 15th November. The conference will address the threat landscape of cyber attacks, as well as privacy, integrity, and security of data involving Smart Grid technology. One of the feature speakers will be

William (Curt) Barker
Associate Director and Chief Cybersecurity Advisor
NIST Information Technology Laboratory

His presentation will cover:

• Standards as policy implementation mechanisms
• Standardization process options
• US Smart Grid interoperability panel
• Smart Grid security and privacy goals and means

Mr. Barker is directly responsible for planning, directing, and implementing the policies and programs of the NIST cybersecurity program. He also conceives and implements strategic plans and executive direction to ensure that the scientific and technical activities promote the mission and goals of Lab/Program and NIST. Mr. Barker is also Acting Chief of NIST’s Information Access Division and is the Department of Commerce Lead for the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace. He was recently assigned to the Department of Commerce Office of Policy and Strategic Planning as head of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Coordination Office.

Already a highly select, authoritative committee of senior level industry experts have come forward to establish further dialogue on international collaboration, framework and policy, strategy, privacy and the role of technology to secure the future infrastructure. As Governments and utilities around the world continue to work on the deployment of the Smart Grid initiative, cyber security issues surrounding the business model are now top priority to national security and investment.
