Food miles on seemingly similar plates

Food miles on seemingly similar plates

Those who want to eat healthy and planet-friendly food should pay attention to a seasonal, sustainable and, if possible, regional origin of their food. In practice, this often proves difficult: 'regional' has sometimes only been packaged in the region, 'organic' is far from being sustainable if groundwater reservoirs in North Africa are tapped for it, and turnips as early as February make it difficult to remember what is really growing naturally at present. Especially the transport routes of food have increased tenfold in the last 100 years, today, everything is available all the time.

A new DIN standard is to provide consumers with orientation. Together with experts from the fields of trade, agriculture and sustainability, Berlin startup StadtFarm wants to develop a premium standard on what food looks like that can be enjoyed with a clear conscience. The criteria to be included in the evaluation will cover transport routes, land consumption, water requirements and the greenhouse gas emissions produced. "Already today, cities could produce about 20% of their food requirements on their own land and obtain another 50% from the region. Here at StadtFarm, even bananas and papayas grow in the middle of Berlin," says StadtFarm founder Anne-Kathrin Kuhlemann.

The standard is designed to reward smaller producers who are particularly committed to sustainability by creating transparency that consumers can use as a guide. StadtFarm also relies on the good reputation of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN). "DIN standards are recognized worldwide and enjoy a high level of trust in their quality among consumers as well," said Kuhlemann. The trick is to let customers grasp at a glance what they are buying. The result should be a win-win-win situation for planet, producers and all of us as consumers.
