fertility clinic and array cgh

Boston, MA, Aug 26, 2011 — Boston IVF is pleased to be one of the very few fertility centers in the world to now offer the latest in cutting-edge genetic testing for our patients.

Their new Day 5 Array CGH (Comparative Genomic Hybridization) testing reveals whether an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes. Too many or too few chromosomes will result in either a non-viable embryo, a miscarriage or -- if implanted and carried to term -- an infant with a birth defect. Such chromosomal abnormalities are also thought to be major causes of IVF failure.

CGH is a screening approach that has been revealed in several studies to raise success ratios in IVF substantially, principally for adult women of the age range 36 to 45, in couples with a past of unsuccessful pregnancies ending prematurely, and in patients with continual pregnancy loss. It will also be utilized in younger women to improve the preference of an embryo and perhaps improve the success of elective single embryo in IVF and subsequently protect against the opposing dangers of multiple births.

Boston IVF is the first fertility center in New England and among a select few worldwide to offer the capability to perform a blastocyst biospy on the 5th Day following fertilization, array CGH in-house on the same day, and access the results within 24 hours to then supplant the embryo on the 6th Day. Furthermore, they can offer array CGH on the 3rd Day embryos too.

Array CGH has two significant advantages versus different methods of screening. The first focuses on new, cutting-edge technology that tests DNA very quickly, so that embryos do not need to be frozen while they are checked. The second is that with a Day 5 biopsy, the diagnostic accuracy is improved by the fact that numerous cells from the trophectoderm of the blastocyst are evaluated.
Moreover, because the biopsy is of the trophectoderm cells, it is thought that Day 5 biopsies may have less of a detrimental impact on embryo implantation rates. The outcome is that fertility doctors are able to now ensure that only high-quality embryos are available for uterine transfer.

Boston IVF provides advanced fertility service like in vitro fertilization (IVF), ICSI, donor sperm & eggs, embryo freezing (commonly called cryopreservation), embryo donation, surrogacy and gestational carrier, PGD, PCOS and other advanced infertility treatments for both women and men in the New England region. The physicians are a team of experienced reproductive endocrinologists who are associated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.
