SeniorHomes.com Team Walks in Support of Alzheimer's
Walk to End Alzheimer's in Pacific Northwest – Seattle RegionSeniorHomes.com, the most comprehensive resource for seniors and their families searching for senior care or housing, joined in the Alzheimer's Association of Western and Central Washington's Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday, September 10th,. The team worked diligently to raise funds and obtain sponsors to aid research funding to find a cure for this debilitating disease.
The Walk to End Alzheimer's strikes a personal chord with many members of the SeniorHomes.com team. "My Great-Aunt Florence has had dementia for the past 15 years. As she lived at home with family for many of those years before moving into a care home, I watched her struggle with this debilitating disease," says Jacqui Howell, Production Manager at SeniorHomes.com. "I know that science is very close to making a major breakthrough in the prevention and/or treatment of Alzheimer's and I am proud to contribute to this valiant effort."
Research advances are made every day, offering hope for millions of individuals whose lives have been affected by Alzheimer's disease. New medications are being formulated, thanks to research funded by efforts such as the Walk to End Alzheimer's, which have the potential to stop the progression of the disease. New diagnostic criteria enable physicians to diagnose the disease sooner than ever before. One day soon, physicians may be able to detect the presence of Alzheimer's disease before symptoms become apparent.
With these advances and the support of the many individuals who have worked to make this event a success, a cure could soon be in sight for the millions of people affected. A total of 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease (http://www.seniorhomes.com/p/alzheimers/), and nearly 15 million Americans serve as unpaid caregivers for a loved one or friend suffering with Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, and it's the only cause in the top ten without a way to cure, prevent or slow the progression of the disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association website.
Since 1989, the Walk to End Alzheimer's has been an all-age, all-ability event held in more than 600 communities nationwide each fall. To date, the Walk to End Alzheimer's has raised more than $347 million to aid in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
