SDSU’s Cross-Cultural Center Presents An Evening with Angela OH
SAN DIEGO, CA: In honor of Asian & Pacific Islander Month, on Thursday, April 26th at 4:00pm, The Cross-Cultural Center of San Diego State University presents one of our Nation’s most respected Asian Pacific Islander activist and diversity expert, Angela Oh. This lecture and discussion at Student Services East – 1500 - offers a platform for open dialogue concerning issues of diversity, immigration and civil rights. Angela Oh has held many prominent roles including being appointed to former President Clinton’s President’s Initiative on Race Advisory Board and as a spokesperson and mediator for the Asian American community during the Los Angeles riots. She is also an ordained Priest, Zen Buddhist-Rinzai Sect. The Cross-Cultural Center will be hosting a reception with Ms. Oh immediately after her presentation at the Lipinsky Hospitality Suite, Student Services West 1808.
“We are excited to have such a prominent leader and distinguished speaker as Angela Oh come to San Diego State University. The passion in her speaking reflects her work as a grass-roots activist, world-renowned lecturer, and national voice of the underserved. Personally, I can’t wait to see what she has in store because I know it will be insightful, thought provoking, and will challenge us to reconsider how we view social justice and public policy.” Arnold Paguio, Coordinator, Cross-Cultural Center.
Angela E. Oh is an attorney, teacher, and public lecturer. Her Los Angeles based law firm, Oh & Barrera, LLP offers representation in state and federal criminal matters and civil rights.
Ms. Oh has served on select commissions and boards, including the Federal Judicial Nominations Committee for U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, the Federal Magistrate Judge Selection Panel for the Central District of California, and the California Commission on Access to Justice. She currently serves on the boards of Washington D.C.-based Women’s Policy, Inc. and the Western Justice Center Foundation. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company and a Commissioner on the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.
In June 1997, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the President’s Initiative on Race. She served as part of a seven-member Advisory Board in an effort directed at examining how race, racism, and racial differences have affected the United States.
Between 1998 and 2002, Ms. Oh left the full-time practice of law to study, teach, and write. Ms. Oh’s lectures have taken her into both national and international arenas, including China, Korea, the Middle East, Northern Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
She is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Masters in Public Health degrees. Her Juris Doctorate is from King Hall, the University of California, Davis School of Law.
The SDSU Cross-Cultural Center’s Mission is: to provide safe spaces and fosters intellectual inquiry, identity development, social change, and acceptance of all people and cultures. In the spirit of San Diego State University’ s mission, the Center develops leaders to address local and international community needs. The Center advocates for the underserved and underrepresented.
