Insurance Navy Brokers Warns Against Driving Under The Influence Of Marijuana
Chicago, IL - January 17, 2020. On January 1st, 2020, recreational marijuana became legal in the state of Illinois. Marijuana is legal to consume for people over 21 years of age, but there are penalties for misuse and abuse of products. Before driving after consuming marijuana, remember it is dangerous and illegal. There are rules in place for purchasing products. Consumers will need a valid ID to prove their age. A person can legally purchase up to 30 grams of marijuana. Additionally, a person can purchase up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, like hash oil, and up to a half gram of THC infused in other products, such as edibles.
People from other states may purchase marijuana with a valid ID. However, they can only purchase half the amounts listed above. No one from out of state, or in-state traveling to other states, should take marijuana from Illinois to surrounding states where it is not legal.
The current cannabis laws allow people to consume marijuana at a private residence. In Chicago, those caught consuming cannabis products on their front porch, backyard, or on a balcony can still be ticketed. Mayor Lightfoot and the interim police superintendent have stated that police will not enforce this law strictly.
Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal and a danger to public safety. While the public generally associates a DUI exclusively with alcohol, driving while under the influence of marijuana will also result in a DUI. Marijuana weakens a person’s ability to maintain focus, distorts perception and slows down reflexes. Do not get behind the wheel after using marijuana. It is recommended that consumers wait at least four hours between smoking marijuana and driving. The recommended time increases to six hours when taking marijuana orally.
