AOC presents two IPS displays: premium quality at a low price
Dorsten, 25 August 2011 – Nothing lasts forever! This applies also – and especially – to the field of displays. For many years it had been the consensus that IPS panels were comparatively expensive and only worthwhile for professional applications. This does not hold true any longer: With the launch of the attractively designed 54.6 cm/21.5″ and 58.4 cm/23″ models i2252Vwh and i2352Vh, AOC introduces two flatscreens that shine with a fascinating image quality while being affordable for private users, as well. What exactly is behind IPS and what characterises this technology? As a matter of principle, monitors with IPS panels (In-Plane-Switching) provide brilliant images with higher contrasts compared to screens with conventional TN (Twisted Nematic) technology. Furthermore, they convince with a rich, natural display of colours (16.7 million), a very sophisticated depiction of grey levels as well as a high colour stability at a larger perspective (up to 178° horizontal/vertical). TN panels, in contrast, only deliver a perspective of maximum 170° and just 16.2 million colours.
Regarding their composition, IPS panels differ from TN panels in the assembly of the liquid crystals. While they are twisted at 90° in TN models and have a typical screw shape, the LC molecules in IPS panels are aligned in one layer and in parallel to the surface of the display. When voltage is built up via electrodes, the molecules adjust themselves so that light can exit – the pixel glows. While glowing, the crystals always remain in the same position to the eye, thereby keeping colours and contrast constant even if the perspective changes.
Convincing benefits
The advantages of IPS technology are obvious to the user: Due to extraordinary colour stability and the huge colour spectrum both amateurs and prosumers have a much more realistic base when it comes to image editing, for example. And thanks to the wider viewing angles of the displays, they can be watched by a number of people at the same time without any inconvenience.
By the way, this is also true for sporting scenes or action games, because the AOC models from the 52ID boast a response time of 5 ms and deliver fast-paced sequences without blurring.
However, IPS is no technological novelty: For 15 years it has already been in use in a wide variety of applications – such as professional image editing, CAD/CAM, desktop publishing and medicine. The production of screens with IPS simply was comparatively expensive.
Today, they can be offered at a lower price for various reasons: Due to the worldwide computerisation, the demand has risen rapidly. In turn, a higher number of pieces in production allows for better purchase conditions, which can be passed on to the consumers. Moreover, the latest manufacturing processes arrange for minimised reject rates and thereby considerably lower production costs.
The models i2252Vwh and i2352Vh at a glance
The slim Full HD models in a black finish come with LED backlights as well as VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs. This way, they are very well equipped for numerous multimedia sources and high-resolution content.
Thanks to IPS-typical wide viewing angles, high brightness and contrast values (250 cd/m² and 1,000:1 / 20,000,000:1) as well 5 ms response time, the displays impress with an excellent image quality.
The monitors are manufactured entirely mercury-free. What is more, they are energy-efficient and fulfill current international energy standards. Further energy saving settings enable an even lower consumption of energy.
Both displays will enter the market in the second half of September. Retail prices have not been determined yet.
Outlook
Besides models with conventional TN-technology, AOC will in future also offer further models with IPS-technology for demanding target groups and thus will significantly improve the value of its portfolio of brand-products.
