Press release from: Sonitrol Security

Detroit & Farmington Hills– August 22, 2011 – The Detroit Police Department’s decision to enact a verified response policy for burglar alarms in the city has alarm companies scrambling for answers, but not Sonitrol Tri-County. Sonitrol pioneered verified electronic security systems nearly 50 years ago and already protects many Detroit businesses with its unique audio verification alarm solutions.

Unlike conventional alarms, Sonitrol’s verified alarms are sound-based – not motion-based – so when an alarm is triggered, its monitoring professionals can actually listen in to determine whether a break-in is in progress, or whether a false alarm has occurred. Detroit Police says 98 percent of alarm activations are false, putting an enormous strain on its manpower and budget.

“While this news may cause the average business to reassess its security system, there is no impact on the businesses with our verified solution. We’ve been providing verification service to our customers for years,” said Mike Wanstreet, Sonitrol Tri-County president. “Sonitrol helps local police better serve its citizens by verifying burglar alarms. That frees up police to respond to real emergencies. And because business owners don’t have to worry about going in person or sending an employee to personally verify an alarm, it keeps them safer, too.”

Sonitrol has assisted police in over 160,000 criminal apprehensions and its verified audio and video security solutions minimize false alarms. Those two facts sold Bruce Gale, owner of Michigan Brush in Detroit, and Sonitrol customer since 1987.

“In December last year we had a break-in,” said Gale. “Folks in the Sonitrol command center actually heard the burglary taking place using the audio verification system. Police were immediately dispatched to the building and three suspects were apprehended. Sonitrol gives me the peace of mind to have a good night’s sleep. They are the best in the industry.”

Verified Response laws, which require verification of an event before police will respond to the scene, are being adopted by cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Justice Department reports a staggering 95 percent of all alarm activations are false. In a post-9/11 world where security threats of all types exist, freeing up police to high-priority calls is critical.

“Depending on the municipality and the size of their police force, it can take police upwards of 45 minutes to respond to a call if no alarm verification is available,” said Wanstreet, whose firm protects several thousand businesses in Southeast Michigan. “With Sonitrol’s audio and/or video electronic surveillance, alarms are quickly verified and a request for dispatch is made to law enforcement.”
He continued: “Our technology sets us apart. The ability to verify an alarm in real time gives Sonitrol unrivaled credibility with local law enforcement. That is a key advantage as a growing number of municipalities pass Verified Response regulations. Our customers know they are covered, no matter what.”
