Let's Talk Hope brings people together to talk hope and solutions

Let's Talk Hope brings people together to talk hope and solutions

DELTA, British Columbia, December 16, 2019 -- On January 18, 2020, the inaugural Let’s Talk Hope Delta conference is taking place. The first conference held last year in Calgary is expanding in its mission to help Canadians struggling with mental health in three cities this year: Calgary, Edmonton, and Delta. Connie Jakab from National Hope Talks, Fred Wells from 140 Sports Association and Andrew and Meg Neufeld from Alongside You, have joined forces to bring Hope to Delta.

"When we come out of our silos to connect with one another, mental illness stands no chance." – Connie Jakab

As Connie, Fred, Meg, and Andrew put their heads together about mental health, it made them ask the question: How well do we understand the needs of those struggling that have often been overlooked by the available services? How can a community come together to meet those needs? The conclusion was that there needs to be an opportunity for everyone to be together, discuss what is going on in mental health, and talk about solutions, as equals, and as partners in the fight for mental health.

Connie’s family has struggled to support a child with significant mental health issues and with the fallout on their family; now she is working as a coach and speaker to help other families come through similar circumstances. Fred’s family has had firsthand experience with mental illness, and sports, and now he is working to infuse youth sports with mental health training. Andrew has struggled with mental health since the age of 6, and he and Meg started Alongside You to try to fill gaps in mental health services, especially for those who can’t afford them. They’ve all been there. This is why supporting the work around mental health is so important to all three of them — because their awareness of the impact isn't just professional, it's family.

"We’re all here, because we’re not all there. We’re in this together, and it takes a community of connection to do something about mental health." – Andrew Neufeld

The conference is like no other because everyone gets to speak. The day opens with inspiring speakers, but quickly transitions into the focus of the conference, “the incubator”, where the table is the centre-piece and the people who sit around it. Everyone who attends gets to share their perspectives on mental health. The question is then asked, “What was common among all that was said?” What comes out of this conversation is ground breaking when it comes to mental HEALTH, community building, and resilience. The conference puts the “human” back in human resources, and the “social” back in social work. The conference is about putting people first and calling the cities back to community.

This year’s conference in Delta has a prominent sports focus. Fred Wells, who has coached youth sports in Delta for 43 years, reminds us, “Sports is just a tool we use to teach kids about life.”

Let’s Talk Hope – Delta 2020 is in celebration of Bell Let’s Talk Day because Delta needs the conversation to get started, the community to come together, and solutions to be talked about and acted upon by the community.
