Denver, Colorado, August 9, 2011 - Although controversial in nature, the use of marijuana for medical purposes has certainly gained popularity in a number of states. Its benefits for certain medical treatments can no longer be disputed with many studies showing that it can be very effective in the treatment of a number of conditions such as Chronic Pain, AIDS/HIV, Gastritis, Sinusitis, Anorexia, Migraine Headaches, PTSD, Nausea, Insomnia, Arthritis, Cancer and Autism.

On June 2001, Colorado removed penalties associated with the use, possession and cultivation of marijuana by patients who possess written documentation from their physician affirming that he or she suffers from a debilitating condition. In July, 2010, Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill providing a regulatory framework for dispensaries, and to allow controls on the operation, location and ownership of the dispensaries by local communities.

The first step in the process in getting medical marijuana in Colorado is finding a doctor to prescribe it. Not all doctors will write the prescription for it. Only a doctor can give the person a diagnosis for an illness that can benefit from medical marijuana. The conditions that medical marijuana is generally prescribed for include cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS positive, severe pain, and seizures. Once a prescription is issued, the patient can apply for a Medical Marijuana Registry Identification Card from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The marijuana is dispensed at Medical Marijuana Centers which are centers assigned for this specific purpose. They are regulated by the state as well as local communities. The center must grow a large percentage of the marijuana sold. Patients may also grow a small amount of plants, currently limited to six plants, with three or fewer being mature.
