“This was one of our greatest challenges to date,” said Loretta Spence, the firm’s principle. “You are designing for people who are naturally feeling vulnerable due to their loss. Fortunately, the newly-designed mortuary building provided plenty of natural light and large spaces to work with.”
The property Spence’s firm provided its award-winning interior design for is Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto’s only cemetery. It’s a privately owned, 72-acre site established in 1904. The park replaced the original single-story Spanish Colonial Revival building with a new two-story facility echoing historical architecture and Mediterranean gardens. The new building includes a chapel that can seat 150 people.
Spence said the chief challenges of the project were to properly honor the crossroads of cultures, religions and values the park represents; celebrate the architectural style of the Spanish Colonial Revival exterior yet feel contemporary; and deliver authenticity within budget. The park’s management also hoped to facilitate a cohesive flow for memorial services and make it possible to expand business opportunities while accommodating ordinary office functions.
