Seavus Embedded team ported Android RIL on SonyEricsson C510i mobile phone used as modem

As a member to Open Embedded Software Foundation, Seavus (http://seavus.com) has committed to support and contribute to the Android open source community. With the latest project it has proved its commitment to expand Android as the platform of embedded systems by embedding it into more mature technologies and systems.

“Seavus Embedded Division has contributed with Android RIL (Radio Interface Layer) porting on real modem hardware. To successfully finish the project, widely available and generic components were used: BeagleBoard XM as the hardware platform and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as the software platform”, says Mr. Kosta Karpuzovski, Strategic Program Manager.

SonyEricsson C510i mobile phone was used as the modem in the project, with a main focus on the generic component of the solution. This way the same implementation is ensured to apply on a wide range of SonyErricson mobile devices.

The project focuses on supporting all major functionalities such as Voice call, SMS, MMS, Data transfer and Internet access. The main communication channel to the modem is over USB, using standard Linux CDC/ACM drivers. The primary channel is controlling the modem, enabling Voice calls and SMS while secondary channel enables data transfer over GPRS.

“This last achievement is one more proof that Seavus will continue developing Android products and applications beyond cellular phones that create the ultimate customer experience”, adds Mr. Karpuzovski.
