SGS Successfully Conducts CE Certification of Stone Products in China

SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, successfully offers testing and CE (Certificate of Conformity Europe) certification for stone exports to European countries at its laboratory for natural stone and homogeneous material in Xiamen, China. Strategically positioned in one of the major stone production and export regions of China and a leading source of stone in the world, the SGS lab, offers excellent support for local and international trading companies by ensuring quality control of the stone products that enter European markets.

The Certificate of Conformity Europe (CE Mark) is a seal that indicates the product to which it is affixed is in conformance with EU Product Safety Directives. Since 2007, the European Community has required most stone products to bear the CE mark, according to Directive 89/106/EEC. Stone products covered include slate for roofing and exterior walls, facing panels, fixed-size boards, flooring plates and stone products for roads.

Due to high demand for testing and certification services of stone products in China, SGS officially opened its laboratory for natural stone and homogeneous material in Xiamen, China on August 7, 2009, which has saved local and international trading companies a lot of time and money, as they do not have to send samples for testing and certification abroad.

With 40 employees and about 1,000 m2 of floor space, the lab in Xiamen was the first to be opened by a third-party organization in China. Xiamen’s laboratory performs tests and certification of natural stone as well as carries out tests on homogeneous products, such as artificial stone, ceramic and metal. Regulated by ISO 17025 and accredited by the China National Accreditation Service (CNAS), the laboratory provides excellent technical support to international companies by providing quality control and product guarantees. To date, in 2011, SGS has issued CE certificates to 250 enterprises for stone products and 80% of the enterprises obtaining CE certificates in Xiamen were issued by SGS.

Drawing on its first-rate expertise and know-how, SGS provides excellent support for trading companies, ranging from the preliminary investigation and interpretation of the directives up to and including the application of the CE Marking. Throughout the certification process, SGS’s highly skilled experts test samples of the stone products and review the accompanying technical documents.

SGS is highly recognized by the Xiamen International Trade Enterprises Association for its authority, impartiality and comprehensive abilities and has become the first organization successfully filed by the center. The main person responsible for the Xiamen International Trade Enterprise Association stated that any enterprise meeting the qualification of small and medium enterprises could apply for as much as a 50% financial subsidy when presenting a CE certificate of stone products issued by the SGS lab in Xiamen. This facility will further enhance the international competitiveness of stone products industry in Xiamen and the development of trading in local stone products.
