Tree Plantation Drive by Atmanirbhara PRC BITS Pilani Team Shell Eco Marathon and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Churu

Project AtmaNirbhara is an initiative of alumni of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, administered through the BITSAA Alumni Trust founded in 2005. While the vision is to transform the lives of the communities in and around Pilani through providing opportunities for education, health and employability, the mission is to leverage the expertise of domain experts and to partner with them to direct their efforts towards the communities in and around Pilani.

For achieving the same, a fully functional infrastructure (physical, logistical, network, relationships, community linkages etc) has been provided for the partner organizations to utilize. In a physical form, this infrastructure is the Pilani Resource Centre– a 16,000 square feet building that houses the activities managed by various organizations working towards the stated vision and mission. Past and present partners include Institution of Eminence Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani, Indian Institute for Sustainable Development, Pratham, Nirmaan, Harva, HelpAge India, and Sustainable innovations.

Atmanirbhara's Pilani Resource Centre (PRC) is a vibrant social innovation platform that enables BITS alumni, current students, faculty and partner organizations to come together, try out new ideas and refine execution strategies for the benefit of the local community. Over the years, PRC indeed has become a significant social innovation enterprise incubator, tapping the passion and creativity of budding BITSian social entrepreneurs, to create scalable social enterprises operating far beyond our local community. The second wave of strategic partners, starting with Aditya Birla Education Trust, is all set to bring in like-minded corporations who are interested in seeding and growing budding social entrepreneurship ecosystem.

PRC collaborated with Team BITS Pilani Shell Eco-Marathon, to plant one hundred fruit-bearing trees in and around Pilani on 23 Oct 2019. This was done in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Churu, as part of the outreach programme of PRC. A local farmer was identified and entrusted with fifty of these trees, a measure which will go on to help supplement his annual income. The other fifty have been placed under the care of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

The income generated from these fruit-bearing trees will further be used to kick-start several other such profitable ventures that bear in mind the best interests of the farmers in and around Pilani. This will help make the farmers more self-sufficient while taking all stake holders one step closer to a greener environment. This was made possible by the lead role taken up by Dr. V.K. Dube, Director, PRC, Dr. Jola Dubey, Program Director, PRC and Yatik Gupta (Manager Team BITS Shell Eco-Marathon).
