Africa Freight Forwarding Market to Reach around USD 40 billion by 2023: Ken Research

Key Findings
• AfCFTA promises to unlock Africa’s economic potential by boosting the intra-regional trade. Eritrea is the only African country which is not a part of the agreement. By the end of 2018 only 15% of the African exports went to other African countries as compared to the intra-trade levels of 58% in Asia and 67% in Europe. If the trade agreement turns out to be successful the intra-African trade is expected to boost by 52.3% by 2022.
• The growth of the retail sector in Africa can help boost the logistics sector of Africa Algeria, the retail industry logistics is expected to grow by double digits by 2020. Furthermore the government of Algeria has plans for the construction of a deep water port at El Hamdania which would also act as a catalyst for the growth of logistics in Africa. Carrefour, which is one of Europe’s largest retailers, has recently opened its first hypermarket in Algeria.
• In the recent past Angola has re-emerged to be one of Africa’s largest oil exporters. The country’s government is also aiming at becoming the continents logistics hub in the future and hence has been stressing over the infrastructural developments.
One Stop Border Post: The East African Region has taken a number of projects into consideration to improve its road infrastructure. A “One Stop Border Post” is being developed between Kenya and Tanzania in order to boost the trade and tourism. The 240km road is of much importance to the East African and spreads from Tunduma in southern Tanzania to Moyale in northern Kenya and onwards to Addis Adada. The one stop border post project also continues to help in the growth of regional cooperation, facilitating cross-border dialogue and the signing of treaties amongst EAC member countries. This would also help in better movement of goods across these regions.
The Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) is a flagship project of the African Union Agenda 2063, an initiative of the African Union to create a single unified air transport market in Africa to advance the liberalization of civil aviation in Africa and act as an impetus to the continent’s economic integration agenda. SAATM will ensure aviation plays a major role in connecting Africa, promoting its social, economic and political integration and boosting intra-Africa trade as a result.

The railways from Malawai Zambia to Mozambique will help to improve the international trade through the Nacala Development Corridor. The Zambia east line would create a 1500 km corridor from Kapiri Mposhi to the Indian Ocean and Nacala which would help reduce the time and costs of different routes via Zimbabwe or Tanzania
