Atlanta, GA—October 21, 2019— Atlanta-based publisher The Storyline Group announced today that it has reached an agreement with authors Martin Lehfeldt and Jamil Zainaldin to publish their book, The Liberating Promise of Philanthropy: Stories of Grant-Makers in the South.

The book is an extensive study of the unique role that grantmaking foundations have played in the cultural and economic development of the Southeastern U.S., as well as a convincing argument for their indispensability in the future.

The lack of popular histories on the subject means that The Liberating Promise of Philanthropy is likely to be heavily referenced for years to come, particularly since few authors offer more authority. For nearly ten years, Martin Lehfeldt served as president of the Southeastern Council of Foundations, while Jamil Zainaldin is president emeritus of the Georgia Humanities Council. Over the past few decades, both authors have played key roles in advancing the work of philanthropic foundations in Georgia and the Southeast.

“I felt driven to tell these inspirational stories about the Southern States, as well as to describe the all-too-human challenges that impede our most noble ambitions,” said Zainaldin.

“It was a special treat to be involved with the project, to try to capture the history and describe the impact of those foundations that have been active in the southern United States,” said Lehfeldt.

The book’s release in late 2019 is timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Southeastern Council of Foundations, which has partnered with the Georgia Humanities Council to support the book. A special “unveiling” of the book will occur on November 14 at the Southeastern Council of Foundations’ conference in Atlanta.

The book will be available to the public in hardcover, softcover and as an ebook on November 21, 2019.

About the Authors:
Martin Lehfeldt is a graduate of Haverford College and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Among other roles, he has served as program officer for the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, vice president for development at Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University), director of development for the Atlanta University Center, president of his own consulting firm, and president of the Southeastern Council of Foundations. He is also the author of The Sacred Call, Notes from a Non-Profitable Life, and Thinking about Things, a compilation of his SECF newsletter columns.

Dr. Jamil Zainaldin graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of Chicago. In addition to teaching at Northwestern University and Case Western Reserve University, he has served as staff director of the Task Force on Social Security and Women of the U.S. House Select Committee on Aging, deputy director of the American Historical Association, president of the Federation of State Humanities Council, and president of the Georgia Humanities Council, from which he recently retired as president emeritus. He is co-author of Law and Jurisprudence in America and author of Law in Antebellum Society.
