The National Association For Continence (NAFC) announces its launch of a new website in support of its Bladder Health Awareness campaign. This NAFC hosted website will focus on educating the public about bladder health, with all activities channeled in a countdown to National Bladder Health Week, November 14-18. The website can be accessed at the URL: http://www.bladderhealthawareness.org.

It’s estimated that over 25 million adult Americans routinely experience loss of bladder control. Because age is a risk factor for such health problems, the prevalence of those experiencing these problems is likely to grow as a result of the aging baby boomer generation. Bladder control problems can result from a variety of causal factors including obstetrical, surgical or other trauma and neurological diseases in addition to the aging process itself.

The Bladder Health Awareness campaign is aimed at socially engaging others to talk about their concerns with their bladder control problems. Many fear talking about this aspect of personal health because of the embarrassment associated with bladder control loss. Often people lack sufficient knowledge to understand the causes and remain in the dark about treatment options and even means of managing symptoms. To help overcome such obstacles, educational articles and blogs are shared and updated regularly on this new website. The latest news about pelvic floor health will be displayed in the “Breaking News” section. Visitors can actively engage with each other through the site by commenting on blog posts, sharing their stories, participating in the suggested activities and signing up for electronic newsletters. The campaign includes a specially designed logo to keep attention focused throughout the four-month countdown. Additionally, there is a color poster for consumers to order on the website for their doctor’s office or to display in public spaces in their neighborhood, such as a library branch. Visitors can show their support by purchasing a beautiful, beaded wrap bracelet made from semi-precious stones and offered exclusively on the website. The tools to enable the campaign are funded, in part, by a grant from the Medtronic Foundation.

The National Association For Continence is a 501(c) 3 corporation whose mission is threefold: 1) to educate the public about the causes, diagnosis categories, treatment options and management alternatives for incontinence, voiding dysfunction, nocturnal enuresis and related pelvic floor disorders; 2) to network with other organizations and agencies to elevate the visibility and priority given to these areas; and 3) to advocate on behalf of consumers who suffer from such symptoms as a result of disease or other illness, obstetrical, surgical or other trauma, or deterioration due to the aging process itself. NAFC is broadly funded by consumers, health care professionals and industry. It is the world’s largest and most prolific consumer advocacy organization devoted exclusively to this field.
