What is Face Detection and how can banks use it to protect ATMs

Major developer of software solutions for banks and retail BS/2 company presents a biometric technology-based feature of Face Detection for ATMs at “RBR: ATM & Cyber Security 2019” - the world’s leading conference focused on physical and logical ATM security. The event will be held in London in October 2019 and attract 400+ banks and security experts from over 40 countries worldwide to discuss current problems of ATM security and methods of their solutions.

Face Detection is one of ATMeye.iQ solution modules, developed to protect ATMs from both logical and physical attacks.

The Face Detection module analyzes the picture taken by the ATM camera, recognizes if a person’s face is pictured and determines whether it is covered or not. The software uses sophisticated face recognition algorithms that analyze 4000 points of the human face, therefore, the results are accurate and reliable. If for some reason, the face of the ATM user is not detected or covered with anything at the start of a transaction, then the terminal stops the service. Several scenarios can be run on the terminal when realizing this.

• Display a warning message on the terminal screen.
• Turn off or disconnect the terminal from the network.
• Send an alarm notification to the security service.

Thus, when the Face Detection function is implemented on the ATM, the user will not be able to complete the transaction and withdraw the money without showing his face.

Although the main Face Detection function is to prevent ATM fraud, it provides some other opportunities for banks. Since this module is a part of the ATMeye.iQ solution, all information about the user's face image is stored with reference to the transaction, so, in a case of a dispute, the bank can always clarify who used the card during a particular transaction, as well as to find all the transactions made by the person. Also, it allows the banks to create a user base and implement a more sophisticated cardless authorization option.

“The implementation of biometric technology by banks is just a matter of time, - says Tomas Augucevicius, Deputy General Manager of BS/2. - Many financial organizations are confidently following this path. We offer a turnkey solution that can be easily integrated into existing infrastructure. For banks that already use ATMeye.iQ to protect their terminal networks, the Face Detection option will open up new security opportunities”.

Face Detection can be deployed both at ATMs and at information kiosks, and for a full-fledged operation it is enough to take one picture taken with a regular ATM camera, however, if necessary, the number of photos can be configured.

During the upcoming conference, the BS/2 company representatives will talk about the features and advantages of the ATMeye.iQ solution, as well as its significance in the development of the bank’s self-service infrastructure, using the experience of one of the partner banks.
