Green Dot Sign founded to offer an alternative to polluting, plastic braille office signs

Green Dot Sign founded to offer an alternative to polluting, plastic braille office signs

After a decade of making traditional plastic intensive signs, Green Dot Sign founder, Simon Nussbaum wants to make the ADA sign industry more environmentally friendly.

Green Dot Sign launched in 2019 with a patent-pending sign manufacturing technique. It makes signs that are about 99% bio-degradable by weight and every sign reduces plastic consumption by 250 grams versus a traditional ADA sign. Additionally, use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified wood preserves forests. As a permanently installed product, Green Dot signs can contribute to U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits. Green Dot Sign’s break-through innovation offers a fresh alternative to commercial real estate and other public building managers and fills a void for green building contractors.

Since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted the sign industry has almost exclusively used plastic for ADA-compliant signs. While plastic is cost effective, it harms our planet and health. In U.S. Commercial buildings alone, at least 243 millions pounds of plastic ADA signs are in use today. As existing buildings are renovated these signs will be tossed into a landfill.

At Nussbaum’s prior sign company, his team sorted through excess sign material regularly. He explained, “When throwing out a 60 pound polycarbonate scrap my thinking was transformed. As we added it to an overflowing dumpster I had a vision of all this plastic sitting in a landfill completely unchanged 10,000 years from now and was sick to my stomach.”

Nussbaum started considering environmentally friendly manufacturing methods and products. The idea to create signage from a wood base and non-toxic 3D printed material for lettering, braille, and pictograms was sparked by a braille sign with a printed wood background. “I noticed a trend in room signs to use printed faux wood or real wood veneer behind plastic and thought, why not get rid of the plastic? I decided to reduce plastic use, consolidate production steps, and highlight the beauty of real wood grain to make some darn beautiful signs.”

By offering easy online ordering of unique, eco-friendly, ADA signs, Green Dot sign is gaining traction, and hopes to push the signage industry to be more sustainable.
