Berlin, July 11, 2011: Two creative professions face off: editorial and interactive. The second edition of Alligator Magazine is now available in the iTunes App Store. The focus of this issue is on media creators and the future forms of presenting information. What effect do the latest technical developments have on editorial designers, web designers, journalists and users?

Prof. Dr. Dr. Thomas Schildhauer, founder and director of the Institute of Electronic Business (IEB), knows that it is getting easier to find the right information at the right time, regardless of where you are. He develops solutions for thoughtful design and optimized workflow for tablets and smartphones. He is sure that the number of business apps will explode as soon as providers address the security concerns unique to business IT.

The personalization of information is becoming increasingly important according to Robert Miles Kemp of Variate Labs. In Alligator Magazine he describes his work for the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. We spoke with Thomas Heidenreich, CEO of the agency HICOM, about the role mobile devices can play in the fields of Corporate Branding and Change Management. According to his view, users increasingly expect a media experience that is tailored to the device on which they access it. For a look at how such media experiences in the real world and the social connections that can be the result, we turned to Jörg Olvermann who describes for us his own experiences in incorporating an iPad into his daily routine.

Sample:

"The idea that new media forms do not threaten old ones is still true 100 years after Wolfgang Riepl formulated his law. The first newspapers started in the 14th century, the first radio broadcasts in 1923, television came along in 1935 and the World Wide Web has been available to almost everyone since 1991. All of these forms continue to develop in style and content and, through digitalization and ever increasing bandwidth, offer a variety of forms of production and distribution that change over time. But newspapers, radio, television and the internet all still coexist.
Until recently, new developments were limited to the medium they were designed for. These days it is different: Since the advent of the web, the distinctions between media are blurred into information platforms. Is the online edition of a magazine such as Time still a magazine or is it something else? In the online archive of a television network still television or not? And isn't a podcast very much like a radio broadcast? These questions can be answered differently depending on whether you view the issue in the scientific, legal or technical sense. As media contents are digitalized, made available and connected on more and more mixed platforms we have to ask ourselves of the question of the medium through which it is experienced is even appropriate.

We predict these distinctions will begin to erode in the next few years through the convergence of media and new presentation forms. With mobile devices, these forms are brought in even closer contact. Never before have the different forms of media and interaction been so tightly integrated on one platform that in accessible regardless of time and place. When this convergence is successful in creating something of value for users, the definitions of classic media become a thing of the past. The production, dissemination and use of information becomes something else." (excerpt from the lead article "From Cross-Media to Mobile Media")

"Alligator Magazine" is a free iPad magazine published by Golden Alligator. It is all about the future of content. The magazine was recommended in June 2011 as 'Editor's Choice' from the iTunes App editorial staff.
