Blind skier inspires others

SNOWBIRD, Utah – It’s officially summer and in a typical year Snowbird Ski Resort would be closed for the season.
However, with one of the wettest winters on record, skiers were able to hit the slopes until the Fourth of July.
But skiers hitting the slopes so late in the season isn't, perhaps, as remarkable as who has been shredding powder lately. Her name is Brook Sexton. She's a California native who thrives on adventure. Oh, and she's blind, too.
How is it possible for somebody who has no visual sight to make it safely down a mountain?
With the help of her guide Steve Paige, Sexton is able to navigate every turn. He uses a radio to communicate turns and hazards ahead.
Paige is a volunteer who helps people with disabilities gain lost hope.
Sexton has complete trust in Paige to direct her safely. And she shows no fear in filming a recent video produced to encourage other disabled individuals to do what they love.
Paige isn't the only one helping those with vision loss, though.
When Sexton isn't skiing, she's working for the National Federation of the Blind. She instructs both adults and children who have recently become blind by teaching cane mobility and orientation. This method is used to instruct the vision impaired how to travel independently across streets, how to take buses, to use trains and use other public places.
Sexton's goal to teach them how to travel in any city or place is seemingly simple — so each person can become gainfully employed.
Sexton says she loves helping people who didn’t think they could do anything or have lost hope for the future. In a recent trip to Lagoon, she helped several realize their life isn’t over and they have a lot of potential.
“My parents expected a lot of me as a kid," she said. "I grew up as a blind child. I was born blind so they never expected me not to do things. So I was pretty active and willing to do different things.
"I told my mom when I was about 3, that I can’t pick up my toys because I am blind and she said, 'I am blind, too, so go pick up your toys.' I knew pretty quickly that I couldn’t get away with it.”
In today's challenging world people tend to lose sight of the big picture, an area for which Sexton, ironically, has great vision. She hopes her story will inspire others to reach their potential and find the brighter things in life.
