Impact of DUI in California

07-26-2019 07:37 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society

Press release from: Law Offices of Kerry L. Armstrong

San Diego – July, 2019 – DUIs are considered serious in California because of their impact. Alcohol-impaired fatalities have risen steadily and a significant percentage of those killed in crashes tested positive for drugs. It clearly shows that people are risking not only their own but others’ lives, on the roads.

If you have driven after drinking but haven't been caught, you should know that DUI can have a serious impact on your record as well as your finances. If you hurt someone in a DUI, you face heavy penalties, prison time and more.

California takes DUIs seriously

California has strict DUI laws and even ONE offense can lead to about $2,000 in assessments and fines plus 2 days in jail and suspension of your license. You may also be assigned to a 3-month alcohol education program.

California's permissible BAC limit is 0.08%, not very different from many other states. Heavier penalties begin at BAC 0.16%, and you must agree to implied consent to get your license. It means you are permitting the authorities to take a breath test when they stop you legally.

If you're under 21, you cannot legally drink. The underage limit for BAC is 0.02%, which doesn’t allow even minor amounts of alcohol in the blood, say from some food or a church service.

What can be done if a person is accused of a DUI?

If you've been accused of a DUI, you should begin building a defense. DUI penalties are severe, and they can adversely affect you for many months or years to come. The thousands you have to pay in penalties and the increase in insurance premiums alone could have a great financial impact, causing more difficulties.

If a cop stops you and accused you of a DUI, reach out to your attorney right away. Your attorney will immediately review your case to have the charges reduced or dropped. The ultimate goal is to help you reduce the penalties you face as much as possible, potentially eliminating them all together.

A DUI can hurt your finances as well as your future. Do not delay in protecting your own family and future interests, you should consult a skilled and experienced DUI lawyer right away.
