Good Mews Animal Foundation Helps Katrina Cats

Good Mews Animal Foundation, a non-profit no-kill free roam cat shelter serving greater Atlanta, is helping the rescued cats from Hurricane Katrina.

September 19, 2005 -- Good Mews is assisting several groups in the ongoing rescue of displaced cats and kittens from this devastating hurricane. We currently have several cats left homeless by this tragedy available for adoption. One of our volunteers is helping to rebuild an animal shelter in Slidell, Louisiana that was flooded by the storm. Both Good Mews and our volunteers donated hundreds of pounds of supplies for her to take to both the people and pets suffering in the aftermath of this tragedy.

Good Mews is also teaming up with No More Homeless Pets and doing what we can to help with the Katrina animals. We have taken a number of cats that are available for adoption or fostering.

In 1988, one woman decided there must an alternative to shelters that euthanize unwanted cats. She couldn't find one. So she created one.

Fifteen years ago, Gloria Skeen started Good Mews from the living room of her Atlanta apartment. While we have certainly come a long way from these humble roots, our commitment remains the same: finding secure, loving homes for otherwise unwanted cats and kittens. In the last three years, we have placed over 4200 cats into new homes.

We provide a cage-free, no-kill environment for our residents with regular meals and extensive medical care. The only time our cats are caged is for medical observation (and a 15-day quarantine period upon arrival to the shelter). Once a cat has been accepted into the shelter population, it has a home for life. No cat is ever euthanized to make room for another, and euthanasia is performed ONLY when a state of terminal suffering has been diagnosed by our team of veterinarians.

The cats are free to roam the shelter at will, interacting with each other, the volunteers, and visitors. Numerous "cat-trees", shelves, and toys are provided. We also have several "special needs rooms" where our special residents (those with chronic illnesses or those that just don't play well with others) can reside away from the general population.

Our cats come to us from households that can no longer care for them or as stray cats. Many of our residents arrive abused, neglected, or terribly afraid. Often times, these cats are in urgent need of medical care. Our dedicated staff of volunteers spend countless hours cuddling, grooming, and helping these cats to trust and love humans again.
