Press release from: Stevens-Henager College

Salt Lake City, Utah, June 17, 2011 - To address the growing demand for surgical technologists, Stevens-Henager College now offers, at its Ogden/West Haven campus, an Associate of Occupational Studies in Surgical Technologist program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The accreditation was awarded upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology (ARC-ST). ARC-ST is sponsored by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of SurgicalTechnologists.

ARC-ST evaluates educational programs in surgical technology on the basis of their goals, achievements, faculty ratings, student performance, educational resources and strategies, coursework, and curriculum, among other criteria, and recommends programs that meet or surpass the stipulated standards. CAAHEP is the largest nationally recognized accreditor of health science programs, and Stevens-Henager is proud that its Associate of Occupational Studies in Surgical Technologist program has been shown to uphold the high standards stipulated by both CAAHEP and ARC-ST.

As part of the degree, students receive the theoretical and practical training required to be part of a surgical team and work under the supervision of surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists to facilitate surgeries. The curriculum covers systematic surgical procedures, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, sensory and plastic surgery procedures, and nursing, as well as logic, communication skills, psychology, and personal and professional relations. The program also includes an externship that allows students to translate classroom learning into real-world experience, to help prepare them for their career.

The duration of the program is 20 months. Eligibility criteria for the program include a high school diploma or an equivalent GED® credential, a score of at least 21 on the SLE, and a minimum score of 70% on the entrance examination. Admitted students must successfully complete a physical exam within a month of enrollment to retain their enrollment status. Graduates of an accredited nursing program and individuals with hospital training and/or a year of work experience as a surgical technician are exempt from taking the entrance test.
