Sickle Cell Anemia Treatment by Bone Marrow Transplant- A Patient's story

"When both parents have sickle cell trait (SCT), there is 25% chance that each of their children will have sickle cell disease (SCD)." The thing which is mentioned above is also the story of our family as well. We both were happily married couple and were leading towards a great life, and then when we started planning for a baby. We went for various medical tests, so as to assure that we have healthy baby, but there we came to know that we both were having traits of SC. We were worried that maybe our baby will inherit the trait from us and could be the victim of SCD as well. We also consulted with our family doctor and he told us that there are high chances of such things, but every case is different and you might be lucky.

And, then we decided to have a baby but yeah! we were still worried about our traits. After few months of wait, we were blessed with our first baby boy named James (name changed) and he was medically tested to check whether he is having any kind of traits and we were told that he is a normal child. We were really happy for him and we got confidence that the traits will not be inherited in our children. Things were smooth for our family and after 3 years, we decided to have another baby. We had a beautiful angel in our house whom we named Dorris (name changed). Our family was complete now and we were living a happy life but God has written a different story for us as, after few years when she was around 5 years old, she experienced terrible pain in stomach and legs and we gave her medicines, but she wasn’t responding to the medications. Her pain and health continued to worsen. We took her to the hospital for a check-up and later our doctor told us that Dorris is suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia and currently she is getting sickle crisis which can reoccur again anytime. We asked for a solution but they said there is no treatment option available


In a couple of days, Dorris settled down and came back home, we all understood one thing that the treatment by the local doctors was not much effective and her condition may get worse in the future. We decided to find a concrete treatment solution. After having a lot of mail exchange and discussions, we finally decided to travel to India for our daughter’s bone marrow transplant.

Upon arriving in India we were comfortably transferred from the airport to our guest house by the hospital’s team. We were really excited yet nervous about meeting Dr. Vikas Dua as we still had a lot of apprehensions about BMT. To be honest we all were not able to sleep well that day as we kept on thinking about the treatment, recovery and other things related to our long stay. Next day, we met Dr. Vikas who explained things in more detail we still remember that he said that your kid is going to get better from here, God has sent you here so relax. The last line from the doctor gave us a lot of confidence to move ahead with the treatment.

After undergoing few pre-evaluation tests of our daughter and son James the matching sibling donor, stem cells were harvested from him which is a very safe and minor procedure just like blood donation. Than the actual procedure started where Dorris received chemotherapy to destroy the sickle cells, after that Bone marrow Transplant was done by infusing the harvested healthy stem cells into her blood. And after few days her new healthy stem cells growth started. I was praying all along the treatment process. We thank god that the process went smoothly though there were many ups and downs but we were aware of them as doctor briefed the same to us at every stage.

After a month we were discharged from hospital, and we stayed near the hospital for around 2 months as we were advised to weekly visit for checkup and follow-up tests. Dr Vikas really helped us in giving confidence throughout our journey, our daughter now became really thin, her immunity came down drastically but she was getting normal. During this period we really learned a lot about life.

After a long and fruitful wait the time came for our final departure from India, we were really excited especially the kids who were missing their home and family. We were very happy that now our daughter was getting healthy day by day.Dr. Vikas told us to be in touch with him on WhatsApp and also to share all the details and medical reports with him regularly. He also gave us the number of the local hematologist from his contacts in Nigeria for the follow-ups. We comfortably departed from India and landed in Nigeria. Dr. Vikas and his team did very well!... because of their help today our daughter is living a normal life and is also able to perform all the activities now. We are very thankful to Dr. Vikas and his team and also we wish them GOOD LUCK for the future!!
