Conserve presents new ''Sisi'' novel (historical fiction)

Conserve is proud to present ,,Sisi’s Winterlied’’ (Sisi’s Winter Song), Lucas Zandberg’s novel about the ill-fated Empress Elisabeth of Austria (also called Sisi or Sissi). The novel is to be published in the Dutch language in autumn 2007.

The novel is published to commemorate the 170th anniversary of Sisi’s birth and also to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of Romy Schneider, the actress who endeared several generations with her portrayal of the legendary Austrian empress. ,,Sisi’s Winterlied’’ focuses on Elisabeth’s reaction to the tragic suicide of her only son, Crown Prince Rudolf, in 1889.

Lucas Zandberg (Amsterdam, 1977) is a book reviewer and works as an editor for a publishing house. He recently assisted Chinese/Dutch novelist Mayli Wen with the writing of her debut novel about Tzu Hsi, the last empress of China. ,,A lot has been written about Sisi,” says Lucas Zandberg. ,,My aim was to give her more depth, yet it still had to be a novel, not a biography. It was a challenge to show a side of her that has largely been ignored in historical fiction.’’

Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898) was empress consort of Austria and queen consort of Hungary due to her marriage to Emperor Francis Joseph. In the German-speaking world her name is associated with a trilogy of romantic, somewhat unrealistic films about her life. The far more realistic musical ,,Elisabeth’’ (premiere 1992) has been seen by eight million spectators worldwide, making it the most successful German musical of all time.
