Press release from: Savvy Rest

May 25, 2011, Charlottesville, Virginia -- Savvy Rest, Central Virginia manufacturer of organic mattresses and bedding, is now a GOTS-certified company. GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, and it means that Savvy Rest’s manufacturing facility has passed the most demanding organic requirements a product or manufacturer can meet. GOTS certification ensures that organic textiles have been responsibly harvested, manufactured and labeled.

“While any business can sell products that contain some GOTS-certified textile and can properly display the GOTS logo, very few companies have been certified for manufacturing,” says Michael Penny, Savvy Rest’s president. Oregon Tilth, the most respected organic certifying organization, certified that Savvy Rest’s manufacturing facility meets the standard.

In 1990, the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) was passed to oversee organic standards for U.S. food and agricultural products, as more consumers were demanding organic certifications for foods their families consume. Today, more people are also becoming aware of the importance of organic textiles. Fibers and fabrics produced without pesticides and toxic chemicals are safer for human health and less destructive to the planet.

An international working group launched GOTS to develop globally recognized requirements that would offer confidence to consumers and credibility to manufacturers. According to GOTS, the certification means: “Textile processors and manufacturers are enabled to export their organic fabrics and garments with one certification accepted in all major markets.”

“GOTS ensures that the natural materials we use are monitored throughout the production process—from the harvesting of raw materials through all processing and packaging to final labeling,” Penny says. “We are very proud to have met this demanding standard.”

Savvy Rest is the nation's leading organic mattresses and bedding brand, made in Virginia and sold in a growing network of eco-themed stores across the country. Savvy Rest's product line was developed in response to consumers' increasing concerns about indoor air quality and the toxic chemicals used in most conventional mattresses. Savvy Rest Organic Mattresses are made of all-natural latex rubber, certified organic wool and certified organic cotton. The Savvy Rest bedding line includes organic mattress toppers, sheets, mattress pads, and pillows.
