The “School of the Future” will open in Kyiv in September 2011

In September 2011 the British International School will be opening a new school campus in the heart of Kyiv – in the residential region of Pechersk. The brand new seven-storey building, equipped with the latest education technologies, will house the very first “School of the Future” in Ukraine.

New campus is a long-awaited extension to the school, which has been working in the Nivky region for a long time. This new campus has been conceived initially as a primary and nursery school. Plans are in place to scale the Pechersk school up to include secondary school pupils in 2012.

The Pechersk complex lies within the Novopechersky Lypky residential district. The building is brand new and has been adapted to meet the strict requirements of a contemporary ‘School of the Future’. The design philosophy has focused on the maximization of natural light and interconnectivity - to enable enhanced communication.

State-of-the-art education technologies will form an integral part of the learning process. Using an electronic system connected to the world's oldest and most respected libraries, students will be able to access the knowledge amassed by mankind throughout history.

The British International School has entered into partnership with leaders in the field of computer technologies and advanced learning products, these include: Hewlett-Packard, iLand - Apple authorized reseller in Ukraine, and Leater - official representative of Smart in Ukraine.

Thanks to the support of iLand the school will be outfitted with an Apple ‘computer lab of the future’ for information technologies, humanities and science lessons. Hewlett-Packard will be supplying equipment to meet the school’s computing and networking needs and Smart will equip classrooms with the very latest interactive ‘smart-board’ technology.

The new school will offer two education programmes that will run in parallel. The International Baccalaureate curriculum will allow successful graduates to apply directly to top international Universities. This programme will be taught in English by native speakers from the UK, Canada, Australia, and the USA.

The new school is also fully certified and licensed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Sciences to teach the Ukrainian national curriculum, culminating in a Ukrainian Diploma of Secondary Education (Atestat). This curriculum is taught in Ukrainian. However, pupils of either programme study in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment.

The British International School gives a special attention to the rounded development of students. All school students will study music, drama and arts. Physical education and sports also rank very highly in the curriculum and, in addition to regular physical exercise, pupils will have an access to a new swimming pool, tennis courts, a sports field where they will learn the stimulating art of cricket and the dexterity of rugby and football. The school is also investigating summertime training in sailing on the Kyiv Sea.

“When we first started thinking about opening a new school, we decided, that we would use the best educational system in the world as an example - the teaching system that is used by the British schools. I graduated myself from the school in the UK. That is why I have ensured that the education system of the British International School has all the features of the very best educational establishments in Great Britain”, stated Jonathan Edwards, the Head of the Board of the British International School.

“In order to learn children need a safe, friendly and open environment, a place where they can laugh and play just as much as study. This is exactly the environment we intend to create. I can assure you all that the new school really will be a school of the future, not just in the systems we use to teach, but also in our approach to education”, commented Olga Zastavna, the General Director of the British International School.

“After it was announced that the British International School was opening a new campus on the territory of the Novopechersky Lipky residential district, we saw with our own eyes the increase in interest of prospect clients. The partnership between the British International School and Novopechersky Lipky is a mutually beneficial relationship between two strong and respected brands”, said Olesia Romanenko, Head of Marketing and Sales in the Novopechersky Lipky residential district.

“We are sure, that the Apple technologies that will be used in the British International School will make it possible to create a truly modern approach to education. We look forward to teachers and students being able to enjoy the unique intuitive experience provided by Apple technologies, which will inject great motivation and keen interest into the learning process. This in turn will enable the school to reach its main goal – to raise the standards of education, that will give students the strongest foundations for the rest of their life”, said Uriy Vlasuk, Director of iLand, Apple authorized reseller in Ukraine.

“Hewlett-Packard Company has a rich experience of participation in such social projects in different countries. Our children should have the most favourable conditions for obtaining valuable knowledge in the field of information technology as well as in the others. Project ‘School of the Future’ (British International School) is a very important investment in future of our children and in Ukrainian society on the whole. The task of Hewlett-Packard in this project - to equip the school’s educational space according to the latest standards of education technology using our best developments. By giving children the opportunity to work with the latest computer technologies in school, we help them to quickly master technological innovations, and thus to be better prepared for the future”, commented Katerina Gurenko, PSG Country Marketing Lead in Ukraine.

“Today usage of interactive Smart technologies has become a gold standard for leading educational establishments around the world. They are assisting in creation of the optimal conditions for students to be motivated and receptive learners. We are sure, that the British International School, which has integrated the interactive Smart study system into its classroom network, truly deserves the name of the School of the Future”, said Igor Sytnik, Executive Director of the “Leater” company, official representative of Smart in Ukraine.

Founded in 1997, and managed by the educational organisation ABE Group (United Kingdom), the British International School is a member of the European Council of International Schools and is the only educational institution in Ukraine accredited and licensed by Cambridge University as the International Examination Centre. The curriculum combines two educational programs: bi-lingual and international program that was developed based upon the curriculum of Cambridge University and the national curriculum of the UK. The division of teaching into the Bi-Lingual and International programs has allowed the school to provide a much more responsive approach to the requirements of the curriculum. Students who are citizens of Ukraine study according to the Ukrainian curriculum and International program and receive a certificate of full secondary education (Atestat) as well as IGCSE certificate. Students on the International Program study according to the Cambridge Examination Board IGCSE and receive only an International Certificate of education (IGCSE).
