Press release from: Tallgrass Creek

OVERLAND PARK, KS (May 20, 2011) – Twelve Residents of Tallgrass Creek retirement community have knitted 106 squares from leftover yarn that will soon be fashioned into afghans for South African AIDS orphans. The residents also knitted 30 hats to keep these children warm.

The residents worked for the past two months to knit the 8-inch squares, which range from pale pastels and bright colors to earth tones. When the squares arrive in South Africa, a group there will crochet them into various sized afghans.

This outreach work was done as part of KasCare, Aids for AIDS Orphans, a project to provide warmth to the 1.9 million AIDS orphans in South Africa. This number increases by an average of 500 children per day, according to KasCare.

Resident, Nancy Yates said, "The knitters here really embraced this project. We have so many talented knitters and this was a great way for them to do something they enjoy and give back to those in need at the same time.”
