Packington Pork Wins Pig Producer of the Year award

Packington Pork has been awarded the coveted title of joint Pig Producer of the Year by industry experts at Pig & Poultry Marketing Magazine.

Nottingham, UK, May 19, 2011 -- Packington Pork, based in Barton-under-Needwood, has used its generations of experience to win the acclaimed accolade of Pig Producer of the Year, a joint* title awarded by industry experts at Pig & Poultry Marketing Magazine. Packington Poultry also received a ‘highly commended’ for the welfare of their chickens.

At Packington Pork (http://www.packingtonpork.co.uk/ )free-range means free-range. The pigs are bred and live all of their lives outdoors and are produced to the highest welfare standards with the RPSCA Freedom Food Accreditation. They combine their non-intensive approach, knowledge of genetics and superior quality feed to produce free-range meat (http://www.packingtonpork.co.uk/pork/index.htm ) which is packed full of flavour but without artificial additives.

Robert Mercer is a fourth generation pig farmer with a wealth of knowledge passed down to him by his father, grandfather and great grandfather. Their pigs were award winning and now so are his. He is exceptionally proud of his free-range pigs, and always strives to improve life for the pigs wherever possible.

After studying agriculture at University, Robert decided that he wanted to go back to the traditional free-range method, convinced that this is best for the pigs, the farmer and the environment.
The judges of the competition prized Packington Poultry as highly proactive farming family with ideas to keep the farm profitable and the family on the land. The recognised that it is a market driven business, managing the chain from feed specification through to meat distribution, thus ensuring the health & welfare of their poultry at every stage they manage.

Robert says, “We are extremely proud to win this award. At Packington we take exceptional pride on our farm environment to ensure that the pigs are bred, reared and finished totally outdoors. We are one of very few pig farms who can genuinely make the claim that we rear our pigs naturally. It is so often the case that free-range pork (http://www.packingtonpork.co.uk/pork/philosophy.htm) doesn’t really mean free-range, but here at Packington we live, sleep and breathe a free-range mentality for our animals.”
